Travel Insurance Frequently Asked QuestionsMy spouse and children are accompanying me on this trip - are they covered? No. Cover for accompanying family members ceased for all travel commenced after 31st March 2006 (unless they are on authorized business travel on behalf of and fully paid for by the University). The University has been informed of a possible option for accompanying family members to consider and for convenience only, a link is provided on this website. ACE provides this travel insurance option to Monash University employees, Council members, students and their families for holiday trips (100% personal travel) and accompanying family members of Monash University employees travelling for authorised University activities. Details about the "INA-Suitcase" product can be accessed by:
http://inasuitcase.aceinsurance.com.au/monash/ Are students covered under the University's Travel Insurance Policy? Cover is included for Postgraduate and PhD students on authorised University business travel. Overseas medical coverage is arranged for other enrolled students at Clayton and Berwick campuses by the Sports and Recreation Association. Enrolled students at Caulfield/Peninsula, Gippsland and Parkville campuses should deal direct with their student unions. Do I need to notify details of my travel to the Insurance Services office? No, your travel details are automatically transmitted to the Insurance Services office once you have successfully completed the Overseas Travel Insurance Request on this site. You do not have to notify details for interstate travel within Australia, as there is automatic cover. I am taking a laptop computer with me, is it covered? Yes, the baggage section of the policy covers computers to $8,000 on any one computer. NB : The computer must be accompanied by an insured person (ie cabin baggage, not hold cargo) whilst on authorised business travel. Do I need a certificate to prove that I have cover? Yes, you should carry a certificate with you. This also shows the emergency phone numbers. You can obtain your own certificate when you complete the Travel Insurance Request and click on the "Send Request" button. If I rent/hire a vehicle do I need to take out the property damage and liability cover offered by the hire company? Yes, it is most important that you take out the property damage and liability cover when renting / hiring vehicles because: - Section 8 of this policy only provides cover in respect to any excess or deductible on the hire company's policy- Countries such as the US will hold you personally liable for damages or injuries, unless you have the full hire car insurance through the hire car company. - Section 10 - the personal liability cover provided under this section excludes any claims arising from "the ownership or use of mechanically powered vehicles..." Is the holiday/personal travel component of my trip covered? Yes, the policy covers holiday travel incidental to authorised business travel. Do I have to declare (before travelling) a pre-existing medical condition? Yes and you should note the following clauses: Section 4 - Overseas Medical Expenses This section excludes cover for medical or other expenses that are incurred in relation to any condition which was known would require treatment during the period of travel. Section 4 - Additional and Forfeited Expenses This section provides cover for losses incurred as a direct result of 'unexpected' death, injury or sickness of the insured person. Section 6 - Loss of Deposits and Cancellation Charges This section provides cover for loss of travel or accommodation expenses paid in advance caused by the 'unexpected' death, injury or sickness⦠of an insured person. Section 8 Alternative Employee Expenses This section provides reasonable expenses to send a substitute person to complete the journey and it's objectives. Cover is excluded where the original insured person's journey is undertaken against medical advice. Whilst there is no specific requirement in the policy wording to declare a pre-existing medical condition, you should note the above points and if you believe that there could be any possibility for confusion or a possible denial of cover by the insurer then obviously it would be prudent to provide the Insurance Services office with brief details of the condition and intended travel so that insurers can be asked to provide a 'Note and Allow' How do I lodge a claim? A sample claim form is included in this site, or a copy can be obtained from the Insurance Services office if necessary. Please refer to the section on this site; Claims Procedures. Where can I obtain information as to whether it is currently 'safe' to travel to a particular country or not? The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issue travel warnings from time to time recommending that travellers should consider deferring travel or not undertaking travel at all. Such travel warning information can be acquired by contacting the Australian Embassy in the country you anticipate travelling to or either the Australian Foreign Affairs and Trade Department in Canberra or on our insurers Website at http://www.dfat.gov.au Are there any exclusions or limitations in the policy that I should know about? Yes, all policies contain conditions, exclusions etc. You should refer to the policy wording which is also available on this site. |
